Toast, the Boston-based restaurant and retail technology platform, has launched Toast Fuel, a set of capabilities that lets fuel operators and convenience stores run in-store and at-the-pump fuel payments alongside retail and foodservice on one cloud-native platform. The ISV offering includes pump management, EMV payments, fleet-card acceptance, and Toast’s kitchen automation tools, and is initially available to NeXGen PRIME users, with more dispenser support planned later in 2026. The main objective is to bring modern software to convenience stores, which sell an estimated 80% of U.S. fuel but often run fuel and retail on disconnected systems, using payments as the common layer across fuel, food, and retail. Separately, Walmart plans to extend tap to pay to its U.S. fuel stations by mid-2027. Key players include Toast chief operating officer of retail Omri Traub, who said customers expect to buy gas, coffee, and groceries in one stop, and Walmart.
