Stripe will work with FedEx Dataworks, the predictive-analytics service of FedEx, to incorporate signals from FedEx’s shipment network into Stripe’s platform in support of financing for small and medium-sized businesses. FedEx has also agreed to offer Stripe as a payments-processing option, giving shippers more than 50 additional payment methods; FedEx says its network moves goods worth more than $2 trillion daily, while Stripe processes more than $1.9 trillion in annualized payment volume. The main objective is to bring AI-driven, data-based underwriting to payments and lending, using shipment history rather than bank statements to extend financing to “tens of thousands” of companies, with the financing venture expected to launch early next year and viewed by both parties as a long-term deal. Key players include FedEx executive vice president and chief digital and information officer Vishal Talwar, who called the link “an important step in laying the foundation for future innovations across the global economy”; the deal follows Stripe’s July data partnership with TSG and its late-August decision to walk away from a more than $53 billion bid for PayPal made with Advent International.
