Accrual, the intelligence layer for modern accounting firms, has agreed to acquire the accounting-firm technology and business of Puzzle, including its AI-native general ledger and month-end close products, bringing Puzzle founder and CEO Sasha Orloff and members of his team into Accrual. The main objective is to expand Accrual beyond tax preparation into client accounting services (CAS), advancing its goal of offering firms one platform spanning tax, audit, CAS, and advisory work; Puzzle will continue operating independently for the startups and small businesses that use its general ledger directly. Accrual launched in February 2026 with $75 million in funding led by General Catalyst and has since been adopted by firms including Armanino, Aprio, H&R Block, and Creative Planning, while Puzzle’s technology serves more than 7,000 startups, small businesses, and accounting firms. Key players include Accrual co-founder and CEO Cosmin Nicolaescu, who said the deal will help “bring production-ready AI to CAS faster,” and Puzzle’s Orloff, who will join Accrual as part of the transaction.
