Chime Financial is exploring how to bring stablecoins into its consumer banking platform, a sign that the technology is moving beyond crypto trading and into everyday payments. The San Francisco-based fintech asked blockchain technology companies to submit proposals in late spring to provide “end-to-end” stablecoin wallet services, according to Bloomberg. The main objective is to let Chime customers send and receive digital assets without needing a separate account or another provider, embedding stablecoin functionality directly into its existing app rather than requiring users to go elsewhere. This builds on Chime’s broader stablecoin push: Chime registered for a new stablecoin called Open USD in June, which is set to go live later this year, and Chime was among several dozen companies that signed onto Open USD, a stablecoin designed for global money movement. Key players include Chime, led by CEO and co-founder Chris Britt, who has framed the effort as part of building shared infrastructure for digital money movement, and the unnamed blockchain firms competing to supply the wallet technology behind the feature.
