Visa’s Shift Toward Agentic Driven Commerce

  • January 18, 2026
  • Chart Of The Week, Insights

Visa (NYSE: V) is leveraging its custom artificial intelligence (AI) technologies through its Visa Intelligent Commerce initiative. What makes this service stand out is the deployment of autonomous AI agents that can independently guide and manage users’ ongoing or incomplete shopping journeys, decision-making processes, and payment activities. These agents manage extended “sessions,” multi-step tasks that may span several days, such as comprehensive comparison shopping, trip planning, or complex B2B procurement orders. Visa is evolving from a traditional, passive payment processor, where the company receives transactional requests, into a more initiative-taking and participatory commerce partner.

Let us explain.

We see three near term new or improved AI driven “Sessions” capabilities for Visa:

  • First, maintaining long-running sessions and context without losing user preferences, budget constraints, or prior decisions. This transformative capability is supported by platforms like Amazon Bedrock AgentCore integrated with Visa Intelligent Commerce, which manages large context payloads and extended session durations.
  • Second, Visa emphasizes carrying shopping history and intent across sessions using secure tokens. This allows hyper-personal experiences, tailored recommendations based on past behavior, inventory, and budget. AI analyzes transaction data to embed intelligence into the commerce flow, making each session smarter and more relevant.
  • Third, AI powered real-time risk assessment during agent-driven sessions. This risk assessment includes Visa Trusted Agent Protocol which verifies agent identity and user representation. Behavioral intelligence, bot detection, and fraud scoring to distinguish legitimate AI agents from malicious ones. Tokenized credentials ensure sensitive payment data remains protected while in transit through the session. This builds a “trust layer” essential for scaling agentic commerce.

This is just the beginning.

Visa’s agentic AI strategy revolutionizes conventional payment processes by breaking them down into a series of intelligent sessions, enabling new service offerings and generating additional revenue streams. By focusing on AI-driven e-commerce, Visa transforms isolated transactions into unified, context-aware experiences, positioning itself as a trusted foundation for payments in the emerging landscape of agentic AI commerce.
