Primer, a payment orchestration infrastructure provider founded in 2020 by former PayPal and Braintree leaders, has raised a $100 million Series C led by Sofina, with participation from Peak XV Partners and existing backers including Balderton, Accel, ICONIQ, Tencent, and Speedinvest, bringing total funding to $170 million. Primer’s platform sits across a merchant’s payment stack from checkout to payout, capturing more than 400 data points per transaction and managing over 95% of customer payment volume on average for brands such as GetYourGuide, Dialpad, and Printful. The main objective is to expand its fintech AI capabilities, including its Primer Companion agent, which can run experiments and optimize payment performance within merchant-set parameters, and to accelerate growth in the US, where Primer plans to hire up to 50 people. Key players include Primer co-founder and CEO Gabriel Le Roux, who said “every payment decision in a large business will be initiated, optimized or audited by AI,” and lead investor Sofina.
